Writing Stories for Children

Writing stories for children is fun and can be an enjoyable way to make some extra money too! Kids make great children’s book and storywriters. Why not get your youngster off to a great start as an author and a businessperson!

Have your young author follow these tips to get this fun and educational business off to a fabulous start:

Children like stories about other kids, animals and silly things.

Spend some time in the library doing your research. Ask the children’s librarian what books are most popular and read them. Don’t forget some of the old classics too… anything by A.A. Milne (Winnie the Pooh) or Beatrix Potter (Peter Rabbit) would be a great place to start.

Think about if you want to do a series of stories or just write fresh each time. Get a notebook and start writing down your ideas. Use this notebook as your story brainstorming command center. Don’t worry about writing neatly, just jot things as they come to mind.

Once you have an idea in mind, start to outline your story… kind of like a sketch of where your story is going. Then just start writing.

As you write you may discover your title too. Make sure you write down title ideas in your command center notebook as well!

Let your story sit for a day or two once you are done and then pick it up again and do another draft of it. Let your parents or other adult give you feedback, etc., and then write your final draft.

Once you have a finished manuscript there are lots of options for the actual sale of the story. You can take it to an office supply store and have your story copied and bound by them relatively inexpensively.

Then you can begin to sell the stories to family and friends.

Offer to do a story hour at your local library and read one or two of your stories there. Then pass out flyers on the other stories you have written along with the pricing, etc.

If you want to take it a step further, send your story to some children’s magazines and publications. Some great books are available at your library on how and where to submit your work.

Most of all keep writing and keep jotting ideas down as you go along.

The more you write, the more comfortable you will be and the more developed your writing style will become. Soon you’ll have your own library full of your own creations to give as gifts and sell.
