How to Start a Baking Business

Business Idea for Kids & Teens

Traditional and fun, selling baked goods is a wonderful way to add some money to your child’s wallet!

Everyone loves delicious baked goods and these days few people have time to actually do the baking themselves. This combination makes for a great business idea for your kids! So if you and your children love to bake, let’s get started on some tips for your kids to get started in this business!

1. Choose 2-3 recipes that your child already enjoys making and have had success with in the past. Is she known for her wonderful banana bread? English tea scones? Fabulous Chocolate Chip Cookies?

2. Pull the recipes for those baked goods out and make a list of their ingredients. Take this list with you to the grocery store and as your loading up your cart, write down the prices for each ingredient. 3. Now here’s where your child’s math skills come in! She’ll need to determine the price per recipe. For instance, if butter costs $2.00 for a pound and you need ½ a pound for your recipe that is $1.00. Flour is typically sold in 5 pound bags, so she will need to break that down to cost per cup, etc. This way she can determine how much each recipe is costing her to make.

4. Together you’ll want to decide on the right price to sell the goods. You’ll want to double or triple your cost per recipe item as your price for your customers. That’s how you make your profit. Take a look at the cost for similar items at the grocery store as well so you have an idea if people will pay what you need to charge.

5. Have your child think of a fun name for her business like Kathy’s Kitchen or Belinda’s Bake Shop or Tammy’s Temptations. Clever names are easier to remember as are ones that rhyme.

6. If your child is computer savvy, have her make up some fun flyers promoting her wares.

7. Now, let the fun begin and start baking. Have her bake up several samples of the recipes and start sharing. Let people taste free samples and then let them know that she can bake more for them and hand them her price list!

8. Remember to provide prompt service when orders come and only deliver freshly baked goodies.

9. When hearing about special events, she can offer her services for them… baby and bridal showers, birthday parties, anniversary events, etc.

10. Spread the word… carry samples with you (as well as flyers and price lists) so you can let more people know about your child and her great goodies!

Happy baking!
